Darkness Beckons

I'm trucking along.

With the help of a blizzard trapping my wife and me in our apartment, lots of daemons have been ripped off their old bases, trimmed to size (removing tabs and cutting down old bases), and glued to their new round and roundish bases. I've also started sanding (by which I mean gluing sand to) some of them.

Yep, those are the old "Diaz Daemonettes". I know they're worth a fortune, but I want them for myself. Even more so those Seekers. They were out for what seemed to be only a couple of minutes, and I own some. Go me! Rebasing the Bloodletters was sort of an issue. I ended up having to chop the base up rather than cut their feet off, which ended up making them look... interesting. Hopefully some clever work with sand will fix that.

Down toward the front are some gnoblars I'm raiding my bits box to make Horrors out of. A few snips here, the gluing of random bits there, and when I'm done I should have what look like impish creatures mocking reality. Once again I had to cut sections of base off before gluing them down to their new rounds.

Another classic oddity comes in the form of this Lord of Change. He's from back when I first started playing 40k, which if you know this model as well dates us both. His base is a GW 50mm from the Centurion kits. I just bought them off of eBay loose. Also, I added the smoke billowing from the Hell Pit Abomination's mace hand in front of the Lord. I'm going to paint it up as some form of blue energy flowing forth to form one of his spells.

Speaking of loose bits from eBay, I went ahead and picked up some High Elf chariots and Steeds of Slaanesh loose as well. All in all, once I added two Daemonettes and some of the old metal wheels from the old Chaos Chariot kit, I was able to build each chariot for around $9 a pop. Not too shabby.

The next mini is a Nurgle Chaos Lord I did a quick head swap to in order to make a Herald. I've always thought that this was a great mini, so I used this project as an excuse to buy him. His new head was cut from the Dark Eldar Venom jetbike trophy racks.

That's it for now. According to UPS I should be getting Ninja All-Stars today, so I'll be taking a quick break from Daemons to try the game out, but after that it's straight back to work!

A Stirring in the Warp... Again...

It's been too long since I've been here. I haven't not been gaming. I've rather been playing X-Wing.

A lot.

Still poorly, but a lot.

Since the only real hobby time I've really gotten out of that particular game is painting the engines on the Millennium Falcon, and a pretty poor repaint of Poe's X-Wing, I haven't had a reason to post.

Recently, however, some things have changed in my life, and I have time to fiddle around with toy soldiers again.

Be warned, a mini rant lies ahead.

Long ago, perhaps before you were born, dear reader, I started reading the "Redwall" series of books. I was never really a devout reader of anything, but this world called to me. There were only the first two books at the time, but both Redwall and Mossflower resonated with me in a way no book ever had. I was instantly hooked. I would go on to spend hours pouring through the 22 books in the ever expanding saga, reading about heroes like Matthias, Martin the Warrior, Bella, Mattimeo, and so many, many more.

...But no character ever stood out to me like Cluny the Scourge. The savage, sadistic, and at times outright insane pirate rat captain from Redwall. His brutality, ingenuity, and callous disregard for the lives of his enemies as well as his crew cemented him as one of my all time favorite villains.

I looked for a picture to post here that might do him justice, but none seem to exist that do him justice as described in the books. Also, please don't go watching the awful animated series. I have seen parts of it, and let's just say that it's.... Unfortunate.

A few years later, I wandered into a Games Workshop store (the one located in Fair City Mall- either the first or second store in the States) looking for Battletech miniatures and books. They had lots of miniatures, but no battlemechs. Obviously, this store sucked. After I chatted with the store staff member on duty for a second, I told him I was in a bit of a hurry and had to run (no sense in staying if they didn't have what I wanted). He asked me to hold on for just one bit, and he ran to the display of back issues of White Dwarf on the back wall. He grabbed one of the older issues, and handed it to me saying "here, take this with you and read up a bit on us". I said I would, and headed home.

Later that night I pulled out the magazine, and started leafing through it. There were a fair few sci-fi minis, but meh. They couldn't stand up to the coolness of a battlemech, and the universe just didn'the look nearly as well fleshed out. There were some other articles, none of which stick with me to this day. Finally, as I neared the end of the magazine, I came upon the battle report.

I stopped turning pages right there.

There, laid out before me, was an army of rats. Just like in Redwall! This was the greatest thing ever.

The story goes on from there, but basically I started playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle a bit later, and always loved my skittering, chittering, Skaven. I have some of the very first miniatures sitting in the figure cases and display case right behind me as I type this. I have three of the pins GW was giving out during the End Times when I snatched up the remaining few minis I needed for my collection right before...

Before they destroyed the game I loved. Don'the get me wrong, 8th edition was no masterpiece of game design by any stretch. I think that is what led to its downfall. If you have a game that is that broken, and requires literally hundreds of very expensive miniatures to play, it will just fall flat. That is what that edition of the game did.

Then, Age of Sigmar leaked. The horrible rumors were true. A four page ruleset, no more "rank & flank", and worst of all, no points values. The rules actually called for players to just grab whatever they had lying around toss them down across the table from each other, and go at it. No semblance of balance whatsoever.

I was out. Done with it. No more GW for me. It had been nearly a year since my last game of 40k, and there was Kings of War to fill the void. I could even use my Skaven with one of their platesting lists.

Cut to last month. I was strolling through the forums over at Dakka Dakka, and I came across a link to the PPC project. Lots of the people on the thread were commenting about the system making the game rather balanced. Plus, since the system was being worked on by a worldwide internet community rather that a few guys in England, issues could be addressed and balanced as needed.

...And so, with a sigh, I said "why the hell not?" And went about considering my choices to try the new system out with. It turned out to be a pretty easy choice. The only army I had with no recent rulebook had by far the most broken book in the ruleset I did have that I could use them in. My Daemons.

Into the dip they went. I was going to have to make them uniform across the whole army, so every last bit of paint would have to come off.

More astute viewers of the image above may note that what is in that container is not Simple Green.

It's actually a product you in the States can find over at Dollar Tree called "LA's Totally Awesome!". It runs $1 per bottle, and it took 2 bottles to fill the container pictured. There are two advantages to it over Simple Green. First, it's cheap. Much more so than the alternative. Second, it's faster. This stuff devours most paint in two days. Be warned, wash your hands super well after using this stuff. I missed some under my wedding band, and the results are not too pretty. Once soaked and scrubbed with a toothbrush, most of your minis will look out of the blister new. It seems to have problems getting paint off of plastic though, so stick with Simple Green for that.

One thing to keep in mind- Totally Awesome eats superglue as well, so a lot of your joins will fail. Check all of them before repainting any mini. A lot of my daemonette arms are loose, but because I pinned them in place, you wouldn't know without checking them.

...Well, more than likely you wouldn'the know until it's too late.

As you can see, my Daemons are off their old square bases, and ready to be put onto a new round one. Those are in the mail, and should arrive by tomorrow. Just in time for the blizzard (that may or may not happen, shucks it could be rain). At least if something does indeed happen snow-wise, and I'm stranded indoors, I have something to do while my wife watches Fushigi Yugi. Yes, I bought both seasons for her for Christmas, but I have no interest in watching a single episode.

With any luck, I'll be getting a new toy to play with while refurbishing this army as well, but only time will tell.

Dusthammer 40,000

This is a short one.

Demitra, having jumped ship on 40k, has proposed something. We like Dust's rules, we like 40k's fluff and minis, so why not put 'em together? This has led to a bit of an experiment: let's apply the rules of Dust to 40k. He has settled on Orks, and I have chosen my usual Chaos Space Marines. He has gone with a horde of Soldier 2 minis, and I have decided that my troops should pretty much all be Soldier 3. I wouldn't have it any other way. So, off to the Dust Warfare force builder. I decided what counted as what and started plugging stuff into the program. Turns out I really couldn't fit in any cultists (just the sorcerer's command section) but I think you'll agree, it has that CSM flavor to it. Since I don't have my "counts as" list in front of me right now I won't list what's what at this point. I will however if this experiment lasts more than a single game. Any way, here's what I'll be running:

Plaguebearers & Chaos Marines- Nurgle Gravy

So, I've been a big fan of Nurgle as long as I've played 40k, and while I wanted to try a Khorne flavored list for a change, Papa Nurgle just calls to me. Having found that Bloodletters are useless, I have to say that somewhere deep down inside there was a part of me that was almost happy. As happy as a bit of me can be after realizing I had just wasted $60 on miniatures that are just plain...

Not Good In Assaults.

This is a bit odd for Khorne as he and his followers are supposed to be the consummate melee fighters. Theirs is the marital prowess to end all martial prowess. That, it seems, is not exactly reflected in their in-game performance.

They're Toughness 3.

They have no grenades.

They're 10 points a piece.

These things make them rather not good. They die en masse as they try to close the gap, and even if they deep strike they'll get cut down by even lowly bolter fire. They're really expensive for their performance, and they simply cannot assault into cover. Believe me, I've seen the results.

Deep strike -> run -> get shot in your opponent's turn -> move -> get shot by overwatch fire -> roll assault distance on 3d6 discarding the highest  -> move in -> get struck first due to no grenades -> maybe kill one or two enemies -> lose combat -> make an instability test -> go pop -> regret wasting hundreds of points on a single squad.

That is unfortunately the "Bloodletter Flow Chart". They're supposed to be an offensive powerhouse, but at Toughness 3 and no ability to dig enemies out of cover they just plain don't cut it.

Which daemons do cut it? Well, in my opinion, Plaguebearers. These fellas have the resilience to warrant their points. Toughness 4, Shrouded, and defensive grenades. Give them a Herald and they also can have Feel no Pain. They're the defensive unit of defensive units. Good luck prying them out of position with a 2+ cover save when they set up camp in a building. Sure they're Slow and Purposeful, but so what? The rule isn't the crippling blow it was last edition. My daemons can't run? Whatever. They're not there to pick fights, they're there to either start the game on an objective or to Deep Strike into position and squat on their location.

Now, this may not be ideal in an all-daemon army, but I'm talking about them in terms of an ally for Chaos Space Marines. Chaos Marine armies have plenty of offensive punch in the forms of things like Havocs, plasma guns, and the universally loved or loathed Heldrake. I can go get you. What I have problems with is grabbing and securing backfield objectives. This role is usually taken up by cultists, and they can be very good at it, but in the end they're really little more than expensive Imperial Guardsmen with less armor and an inferior gun. If they draw any real attention they will die, and they'll do it in a hurry. That or they'll run away. Also in a hurry.

Now, Cultists have one very big thing going for them- they're cheap. 100 points for 20 models with 2 flamers is not too bad a deal.

But what then do Plaguebearers do that outclasses the humble Chaos Cultist? Well, not just the things listed above, but other things that mesh with their allies. They're competent in hand-to-hand combat for one. While they won't go out picking many fights, they really won't be backing away from too many either. Sure, they can be outclassed by things like Terminators, but a lot of stuff is so that's no reason to turn your nose up at them. just rely on your cover to save you, and get ready to try to smack them off the board once they get to you. Better yet, use other assets in your army (remember that plasma I mentioned earlier?) to keep them away from your campsite.

Plaguebearers are also pretty cheap (for a Daemon). Sure, a unit of 20 is almost double the point cost of a Chaos Cultist squad of the same size, but it has massively more resilience. That 2+ cover save goes a very long way toward their survival. Even if they're not in a building (say they're in the woods) they've got a 3+ save, which makes them superior Space Marines (they even get their save against things as extreme as demolisher cannons).

So, what would I do if I were to practice what I preach? I'd re-tweak my army a bit, dropping the Chaos Cultists and either the Chaos Lord or the Sorcerer for a Herald of Nurgle and 20 Plaguebearers. I haven't quite decided which HQ choice to drop, but I'm thinking the Chaos Lord as my army is a bit more of a "hang back and shoot" affair, and the Lord wants to get up in your face, but the Sorcerer is less resilient and a bit unpredictable. It's something that would have to be experimented with. Most likely I'd go with:

HQ
Sorcerer (warlord) w/ +2 mastery- 110 pts.

TROOPS
9 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 plasma guns; Aspiring Champion w/ power sword, melta bombs (10 models)- 190 pts.
9 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 plasma guns; Aspiring Champion w/ power sword, melta bombs (10 models)- 190 pts.
9 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 plasma guns; Aspiring Champion w/ power sword, melta bombs (10 models)- 190 pts.
9 Chaos Space Marines w/ 2 plasma guns; Aspiring Champion w/ power sword, melta bombs (10 models)- 190 pts.

FAST ATTACK
Heldrake w/ baleflamer- 170 pts.
Heldrake w/ baleflamer- 170 pts.

HEAVY SUPPORT
4 Havocs w/ 4 autocannons; Aspiring Champion (5 models)- 115 pts.
4 Havocs w/ 4 autocannons; Aspiring Champion (5 models)- 115 pts.
4 Havocs w/ 4 lascannons; Aspiring Champion (5 models)- 155 pts.

ALLIED HQ
Herald of Nurgle w/ Greater Locus of Fecundity- 70 pts.

ALLIED TROOPS
19 Plaguebearers; Plagueridden (20 models)- 185 pts.

TOTAL
1,850 pts.

I've also played around with the idea of dropping the lascannon Havocs instead of the Chaos Lord, and the idea does have some merit, but I fear 2+ armor saves. This fear is most likely irrational as I have eight plasma gunners in the army, and the Telepathy discipline messes with units in other ways, but that's just my current assessment. I'll have to get some Plaguebearers some time and try this concept out.

...Until then, I'll just keep plugging along with Cultists.

Helbound

Yep, my first Heldrake is done and dusted. I'm ready to try it out on the table tomorrow. This has been one of the most trying models I have put together in a very long time. First of all, the assembly is a nightmare. The wing arms don't go together well, they're a ball and socket joint that you have to hold in place as it dries. Worst of all is the neck. Once again a ball and socket joint, but this time only the top half of the socket is there to join to. I had to sort of blend model cement and superglue in order to get the neck into place. After I Zip Kicked the neck into place, the model cement did its thing creating a strong bond between the two parts.

Painting, as mentioned before, was an experience I don't care to repeat, but I'll have to in order to finish Heldrake #2.

...But it's break time from bronze, at least for the most part. I've finished assembling my Bloodletters and as soon as the glue holding the ballast to their bases dries they'll be getting the ol' primer treatment. Just like everything else I'll be working up from black to a pale fleshtone. Horns will be black, hilts and crossguards for their Hellblades will be bronze, and the blades of their weapons will be the same yellow green as the Chaos Lord's and Daemon Prince's weapons.

It'll be nice to have so much more of my army done. I can really see things beginning to take shape.

My army list has morphed again. This time from 1,500 points up to 1,750. What's in it you ask? well, that's a secret for tomorrow. Get ready Demitra, there's a whole new look for my servants of the Blood God headed your way!

A Chaos Marine List Just For Demitra

Last Tuesday Demitra and I played our second game of 6th edition 40k. While he deleted most of my army easily, one model gave him fits. You guessed it, that guy. --->

Now, I like the Heldrake. I really like it. I've almost finished painting up my first one, and I've got a second one sitting in a box under my modelling table. But is it the end-all be-all of 40k? Not really. It's a bit of a glass cannon that, granted, is hard to engage without Skyfire, but that doesn't mean it's a game-breaker. It's AV 10 across the back, so as it swoops by you all it takes are a cluster of Bolter shots to let it know you're there. A squad of Devastators with Prescience and Krak Missiles will open the thing up pretty easily too (barring horriffic die rolls). Or just go with the simple solution- Aegis Defense Line. It's 100 points of Heldrake killin' goodness, and these days it's pretty much an auto-include in any army any way. Not just for the quad-gun either. Those pieces of cover you can set up wherever you want are pretty spiffy too.

That having been said, it is a very effective infantry killer. That Baleflamer (I've decided against taking a Hades Autocannon) just shreds stuff. Strength 6 is why. Yes, AP 3 is amazing, but at its Strength value it even reliably lights up Terminators, and they can't all save forever. I even managed to off one with a Vector Strike last game.

...But it can be hard to get it where you want it. As long as it's Zooming it has to move 18". That means it usually only gets a single good go at any given target. Sure it can Hover, but doing that allows enemies to shoot at you with their normal Ballistic Skill instead of Snap Shots, and that equals one VERY DEAD Heldrake.

Enough rambling about my Heldrake love however. This is the real reason for the post today:

HQ
Chaos Lord (Warlord) w/ Melta Bombs, Sigil of Corruption, The Murder Sword, Veterans of the Long War- 135 pts.

ELITE
Helbrute w/ Reaper Autocannon- 105 pts.
Helbrute w/ Reaper Autocannon- 105 pts.

TROOPS
9x Chaos Cultists w/ Flamer; Cultist Champion- 55 pts.
9x Chaos Cultists w/ Flamer; Cultist Champion- 55 pts.
9x Chaos Cultists w/ 8x Autoguns, Heavy Stubber; Cultist Champion w/ Shotgun- 65 pts.
9x Chaos Space Marines w/ 2x Plasmaguns, Veterans of the Long War; Aspiring Champion w/ Plasma Pistol, Power Fist- 220 pts.
9x Chaos Space Marines w/ 2x Flamers, 7x Close Combat Weapons, 2x Additional Close Combat Weapons, Veterans of the Long War; Aspiring Champion w/ Power Axe- 179 pts.

FAST ATTACK
Heldrake w/ Baleflamer- 170 pts.
Heldrake w/ Baleflamer- 170 pts.

ALLIED HQ
Herald of Khorne w/ Minor Reward, Greater Locus of Fury- 85 pts.

ALLIED TROOPS
14x Bloodletters; Bloodreaper- 155 pts.

TOTAL
1,499 pts.

Lots of scoring units, and enough armor to keep those anti-tank weapons busy. Those Bloodletters may be dropped down to 13 strong and given the Banner of Blood instead, but with all those Toughness 3 dudes deep striking or running across the board I'm thinking that more bodies is the way to go lest they simply get shot dead. The Daemon Prince is gone, as all he's accomplished to this point is being shot dead and wasting 255 points. Yeah he's a nightmare if he gets his hands on you, but that's a big, huge "if". It is indeed the Heldrake Flying Circus (well not totally, I'm not going to buy a third one).

Hopefully my next post will be a picture of my first Heldrake all painted up and pretty.

The Posting Madness Continues! Daemons as Allies

As I said before, I have been set on using Chaos Daemons as allies for a while, but I have been unable to come up with a finalized detachment. This is what I'm currently looking at:

HQ

Herald of Khorne w/ Greater Locus of Fury, Lesser Reward- 85 pts.

TROOPS

19x Bloodletters; Bloodreaper- 205 pts.

19x Plaguebearers w/ Icon of Chaos (Plague Banner); Plagueridden- 205 pts.

TOTALS

POINTS- 495
HQ- 1 (17%)
ELITE- 0 (0%)
TROOPS- 2 (82%)
FAST ATTACK- 0 (0%)
HEAVY SUPPORT- 0 (0%)

This configuration brings several things to the party. First off, the Herald of Khorne gives Rage to his Bloodletter unit. His Lesser Reward will just be an Axe of Khorne, I'm not even going to bother rolling. This will make him a challenge ace, with an AP 2 weapon and Instant Death on a to-wound roll of 6 (basically what would be Killing Blow in WHFB). Many characters with a much higher point total will be afraid to challenge him. As stated before in a previous article, 20 Bloodletters charging in with 3 attacks each and Strength 5 will make short work of pretty much any squad they touch. at WS 5 they'll be needing 3+ to hit, and 3+ to wound against most enemies, so why bother with the re-rolls for Hatred when it's a more expensive Locus?

Next up are the Plaguebearers. With their less than stellar Toughness of 4 (for a Nurgle unit) and Slow and Purposeful they don't look like too much until you consider their cover save. With a 3+ against anything without Ignores Cover (due to the Shrouding provided by their cloud of flies you see) and even better, a 2+ in ruins, these things are perfect for grabbing and babysitting objectives. They also carry Defensive Grenades and bear Plagueswords, which will shred vehicles with their ability to glance any vehicle on an armor penetration roll of a 6.

What are the downsides to this detachment?
Well, for starters, this leaves my army with no real anti-aircraft capability. Even though it can Vector Strike enemy aircraft, the Daemon Prince wants to be in melee hacking things into tiny bits (1d6+7 Strength 9 AP 2 attacks on the charge against ground targets vs. 1d3+1 Strength 6 AP 3 against flying targets). What, then, do I do?

Soul Grinder. it has a Harvester Cannon that it can fire at passing planes with 3 Strength 7 shots. Marked by Nurgle it has the same 2+ cover save as the Plaguebearers. With a Phlegm Bombardment (Basically a 36" Battle Cannon) it can hang back and tear MEQ units and the like to bits. It's a great all-rounder, but it takes away my Plaguebearers. With the Mark of Nurgle and a Phlegm Bombardment it comes to 180 points, a 25 point savings over the Plaguebearers. But it can not score.

I've discussed other options elsewhere, such as deleting my Plaguebearer pack in exchange for a Heldrake. This leaves me with:

FAST ATTACK

Heldrake- 170 pts.

ALLIED HQ

Herald of Khorne w/ Greater Locus of Fury, Lesser Reward- 85 pts.

ALLIED TROOPS

19x Bloodletters w/ Icon of Chaos (Banner of Blood); Bloodreaper w/ Lesser Reward- 235 pts.

This leaves me with 10 points to give either my Chaos Lord, or more likely my Daemon Prince the Gift of Mutation so that he starts the game with a Chaos Boon in order to enhance his killing capability.

I'm torn, and this may not be resolved until just before I place the order for my reinforcements.

6th Ed. Army Plans & Daemon Questions

As you may have noticed, I'm working on a Chaos Space Marine army in order to learn to play the new edition of 40k. I'm starting at 1,500 points and working toward...

Well, I was looking at building a 1,999 +1 point army list. In other words, a 1,999 point army list (so that you can only field one FOC) but it's okay if you go one point over. The progression I was hoping for would be something like 1,500 points to grasp the new system, 1750/1850 to expand horizons a bit, and then the final "2,000" point army.

Now, I'm a big fan of Papa Nurgle, but this time I wanted to go a bit in a different direction. My original thought was a half-Nurgle, half-Khorne allied force. A Herald for each squad, and a 17 man (thing?) squad each of Bloodletters and Plaguebearers. Turns out I may not even be able to take a Herald (even a single one) in my force at all. You see, the Chaos Daemons book says, right at the top of page 94, "Each primary detachment in your army may include up to four Heralds of Chaos in any combination from the following models...  ...This selection uses a single HQ slot from the force organisation chart ..."

What does that mean?

A) It's a typo. You can just take 4 Heralds as a single HQ choice.

B) It's poorly worded. You can do the four-for-one thing as long as the choice goes in your primary detachment. If the detachment is an ally, you only get a single Herald, and it takes up your one allowed HQ slot.

C) It's dumb. You can only take Heralds in a primary detachment, otherwise you can only take a Greater Daemon or a Daemon Prince.

Personally, I lean toward explanation B, but I'm bracing myself for the eventual FAQ to say C is the correct interpretation.

I'm really hoping the explanation is A. This gives me two rather nice additional squads, and the Heralds to lead them. What am I going to do if the correct interpretation is C, though? Well, that means a second Daemon Prince (to be marked by Nurgle) and two much less impressive Daemon packs. Say the interpretation intended is B. Which Herald do I choose? I'm really quite conflicted here. I really want the Herald of Nurgle for fluff reasons (a Khorne Daemon Prince in the Chaos Marine part of the army to command the Bloodletters, and a Herald of Nurgle to control the Plaguebearers. Tactically I just want a Herald of Khorne to give my Bloodletters Rage, and the Plaguebearers can sit on objectives with their Shrouding (for a 3+ cover save) and Defensive Grenades. Feel No Pain would be spiffy, but it's not really needed. These guys are really there to move into position and then camp out. I can always just add more bodies to the squad.

Those Bloodletters are really where my offensive punch will come from. AP3 swords, and Strength 5 on the charge make these guys excellent shock troops. The possibility of two extra attacks would turn these guys into an absolute wood chipper of gory glory. Seventeen of these dudes (like I have planned) would just delete squads.

In the end, I have a fair amount of painting to get done before I even really should start thinking about adding Daemons to my force any way, so that gives GW a while to decide what's what. The thing is, I have a lot of time to think on these things and to build army lists while I'm here at work. Oh, well. back to the books I suppose.

P.S.- Did I mention it's dumb to put the Champion of Chaos rule on Cultist Champions? Well it is.

Chaos On Tap

With my Miniature Market order placed, it is official. I'm going back to Undivided Chaos Space Marines. Don't get me wrong, I'm still down with Papa Nurgle, it's just that it takes some doing in order to get a Plague Marine army on the table now, and I just don't have the Power Armored Chaos Lord to do it with. I'm looking at converting this guy into my lord, since Terminator Armor (not to mention a Terminator bodyguard) is so expensive.

Points wise. I already own Typhus, a Lightning Claw Lord, and 5 Plague Marine Terminators. Plus two Land Raiders for them to ride around in...

Since I've placed my MM order, what's in it? A Chaos Space Marine codex, a plastic Daemon Prince, and two Chaos Marine squads. Not too too big of an order but this, along with two boxes worth of dudes from Dark Vengance, come out to be a 1,500 point Chaos Marine army.

Here's how:

HQ

Chaos Lord (Warlord) w/ Plasma Pistol, Melta Bombs, Aura of Dark Glory, The Murder Sword, Veterans of the Long War (140 pts.)

Daemon Prince w/ Power Armor, Wings, Ichor Blood, Mark of Khorne (225 pts.)

ELITE

8 Chosen w/ 7 Bolters, 7 Bolt Pistols, 2 Power Axes, Power Fist, pair of Lightning Claws, Veterans of the Long War
+ Chosen Champion w/ Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Power Maul (280 pts.)

Hellbrute w/ Multi-Melta, Heavy Flamer (115 pts.)

Hellbrute w/ Multi-Melta, Heavy Flamer (115 pts.)

TROOPS

19 Chaos Cultists w/ 17 Autopistols, 19 Close Combat Weapons, 2 Flamers
+ Cultist Champion w/ Autopistol, Close Combat Weapon, Shotgun (102 pts.)

19 Chaos Cultists w/ 16 Autoguns, 1 Autopistol, 19 Close Combat Weapons, 2 Heavy Stubbers
+ Cultist Champion w/ Autopistol, Close Combat Weapon, Shotgun (118 pts.)

9 Chaos Space Marines w/ 7 Bolters, 9 Bolt Pistols, 2 Plasma Guns, Veterans of the Long War

Am I 100% sure about the effectiveness of this army? Nope. What I am sure about is the price point and fluffiness. Perhaps if I were to switch out the Daemon Prince for another squad of Chaos Marines the list might get even fluffier, but I WANT a Daemon Prince, overcosted or not, in my army. Why? The mini is spiffy. That's it.

The Cultists will be a real hit-or-miss addition to the force. at 20 strong they'll be fairly difficult to dislodge, but any really focused attention should send them running for the hills. The close combat blob is just asking to be taken apart in hand-to-hand combat. They're going to struggle to be up to the task, but really all I'm looking for out of this squad is to deliver the Flamers into position and set something on fire.

The number of Chaos Marines in the army may leave a bit to be desired, too. With a grand total of 20 Marines, 9 Chosen, and a lone Chaos Lord, this list is a bit light on Power Armor, but it's going to be running screaming toward you, and you'd better do something about it.

Where will I go with this army next? What will it look like at 1,750 points? 1,850? 2,000?

The answer is simple; Daemons. While I hear that the book is rather random, I like the idea of minions of the Warp rampaging alongside my other servants of the Dark Gods. Plus I want to paint up some Plaguebearers and Bloodletters in the same fleshtone as the rest of my army. I think it will look pretty weird and maybe a touch disturbing. Very cool.

That's what's in store for Wargaming Chaos in the future. Tomorrow will see the completion of my Autogun armed Chaos Cultists and perhaps some more Dust Warfare minis as well. Seeyuh soonish.
